Cold Roll Formed Sections
Roll forming is a high-speed method of bending coiled metal into a custom designed metal shape by passing a metal strip through a series of roll dies. The process produces a metal profile with a uniform cross section along its entire length.
Process
A simple process ideal for even the most complex shapes
Cold rolling occurs with the metal below its re-crystallization temperature (usually at room temperature), which increases the strength via strain hardening up to 20%. It also improves the surface finish and holds tighter tolerances. Commonly cold-rolled products include sheets, strips, bars, and rods; these products are usually smaller than the same products that are hot rolled.
Roll forming is a reliable, proven approach to metal shaping that is ideal for modern applications. This process uses a continuous bending operation where long metal strips, typically coiled steel, are passed through consecutive sets of rolls at room temperature. Each set of rolls performs incremental parts of the bend to produce the desired cross-section profile. Unlike other metal shaping methods, the roll forming process is inherently flexible, allowing secondary processes to be integrated into a single production line. For even the most demanding requirements, roll forming increases efficiency while reducing operational and capital costs by eliminating unnecessary handling and equipment.
Roll Forming Advantages
Efficient, effective shaping that delivers tight tolerances on complex profiles
- High-volume capacity
- Ultra-precise processing to very tight tolerances with excellent part uniformity and superior surface finishes
- More flexible and responsive than press braking or extrusion
- Accommodates metals with variable surface coatings, flexibilities and dimensions
- Processes higher-strength steels without breaking or tearing
- Creates stronger and lighter structural components using less steel
Applications
Some of the applications for the roll formed products in different industries
Aerospace
Aerospace
Roll formed parts that are used in aircraft include airframe stringers and interior components like trim and window frames; stiffeners; jet engine components such as honeycomb seals, shrouds and backing rings; leading edges of composite helicopter blades, etc.
Agriculture
Agriculture
The agriculture sector uses a variety of roll formed shapes that include channels and angles and other shapes such as trim and structural components for tractors, wagons, combines, and other farm implement equipment, grain bin floors, chicken roosts, grape stakes, etc.
Elevators and Escalators
Elevators and Escalators
Roll formed parts are used in the construction of elevators and escalators as decorative trim and roll formed shapes are used as internal framework components .
Material Handling/Storage
Material Handling/Storage
Material handling equipment such as conveyors use roll formed pallet rack, step beams and gravity flow channels for framework members.wares, etc. And Storage rack components made by roll forming include that are designed to interlock using keyhole patterns, etc
Building/Construction Products
Building/Construction Products
Roll formed shapes are used extensively by various segments of the building products industry including channels and angles used as joists, studs, furring, slats,, expansion joint , and corner bead used in commercial and residential construction; as metal roof decks and siding panels for metal buildings; as track for sliding doors; as decorative trim for house wares, etc.
Appliance
Appliance
Roll forming is used to make parts for the appliance sector that include refrigerator panels, shelving, shell fronts and shelf ladder, door seal retainers, decorative trim, glass retainer, backsplash, back guard, flipper door, dishwasher rackslide, racktrack, shelf rail, door trim, etc.
Railroad/Rapid Transit
Railroad/Rapid Transit
Roll formed channels and roll formed angles are used in the construction of railroad and rapid transit cars. These roll formed shapes consist of structural shapes as well as light gauge roll formed parts such as track, supports, trim, grab bars, etc
Furniture
Furniture
Roll formed products such as modular and sliding partitions; work surface reinforcements; shelves; drawer slides; kitchen and file cabinets; lighting fixtures; metal picture frames; decorative trim.
